  • Abstract
A new method (CP) measures tidal volume ambulatorily without calibration. The change in the body trunk volume was measured, because it is established that the change in the body trunk volume is equal to that in the lung volume. Four cross-sectional areas in the body trunk and 3 distances between them obtained by optical fiber sensors produced the body trunk volume. Tidal volumes were simultaneously measured by a hot-wire flowmeter and by the CP. The coefficients of the regression lines between them range from 0.8 to 1.9 and show that tidal volume can be measured without a facemask and a calibration by CP
