Abstract :
The Internet had its origins more than 30 years ago in a US government research project with the modest goal of linking a few high power computers around the country. It erupted as a commercial success about 10 years ago thanks to a remarkable unplanned confluence of several innovative technologies: broadband fiber optic communications, the personal computer and the Web browser. The story of its progress and present impact provides an excellent example of the importance of supporting infrastructure in society in promoting innovation, in other words, success breeds success.
