  • Abstract
Summary form only given. DyTR is an approach to trust that goes beyond traditional authentication-based techniques, in which the trustworthiness of entities in a system adapts over time based on system events. Using a socio-cognitive model of trust, DyTR provides an adaptive trust-assessment methodology that allocates resources dynamically to an initial level of credentials, continually assesses trust, and adaptively allocates resources in accordance with changes in perceived trust. DyTR tightly couples this continually assessed trust with low-level resource-allocation mechanisms to ensure that requesting entities are trusted and, thus, permitted to use system resources. If a requesting entity exhibits suspicious behavior, DyTR degrades its level of trust for that entity, and subsequently reduces that entity´s access to system resources, so that other critical resources can continue to operate. This paper features a coalition naval fleet simulation in which DyTR dynamically assesses the trustworthiness of coalition entities and uses trust assessments to regulate weapon, sensor, and communication pathway resource allocations.
