Abstract
The performance analysis of congestion management schemes used in Unix-based communication systems is discussed. The performance of the Static STREAMS buffer allocation scheme is evaluated. Two alternative buffer allocation schemes are proposed and analyzed: the dynamic buffer allocation and hybrid buffer allocation schemes. Queueing models of a Unix-based system are used. The results show that a hybrid buffer allocation scheme based on the expected system traffic is best for achieving superior performance without over-engineering of system memory
