Abstract
In July 2002, BBN Technologies published the first release of the OpenSource CMS (certificate management system), a system of software components enabling the deployment of a fully functional X509 PKI (public key infrastructure). The paper describes the CMS´s journey from its origins as a proprietary system owned and marketed commercially by BBN to its recent re-engineering and release as an open-source PKI solution.
