Abstract
This paper presents the capability of dynamic control modes of a united power flow controller (UPFC) for improving transmission performance. The UPFC is one of the operating configurations of the convertible static compensator (CSC) installed at the NYPA´s 345 kV Marcy substation. The reinforcement capabilities are demonstrated using a reduced transmission system containing the New York power system characteristics. Of particular importance is the dynamic control modes of the series voltage injection. The paper also provides guidelines on how damping controllers should be configured, based on the dynamic control modes of both the shunt and series converters of the UPFC.
