Abstract
The planning and implementation of information systems and technology (IS/IT) following the UK National Health Services (NHS) structural reforms is both widespread and significant. The paper explores the potential role of information technology (IT) in the provision of primary health care in UK. The framework proposed by A. Vepsoeloeinen and M. Moekelin (1987) is used to interpret the nature and scope of market orientation within the NHS. It is argued that if primary care physicians adopt appropriate delivery channels, service packages and are proactive in the use of lS/IT, then the outcome will produce more patient choice, less non attendance and consequently improved health care provision.
