Abstract
Next generation distribution automation systems will require advanced standards as well as systems engineering and architecture development approaches to manifest present visions. A number of challenges are facing the industry in the development of open systems based distributed computing infrastructures necessary for massively scaled automation systems. This paper covers some of the issues now facing the industry as well as some of the technical strategies to help address the issues.
