Abstract :
A graphical method for analyzing synergistic relationships and the relative effectiveness of related muscles is presented. The method is based on analyzing the mechanical energy of the musculoskeletal system using a computer-based model of muscle and limb dynamics. The application of the technique to an analysis of the antagonist relationship between the forearm flexors and extensor groups is presented, in addition to an evaluation of the relative effectiveness of biceps brachii, brachialis, and pronator teres in producing flexion of the forearm at the elbow. It is indicated that the method will enhance educational tools currently used to train health care professionals studying functional anatomy
