Abstract :
Distribution automation is an increasingly important function in the electricity delivery system. Distribution automation systems require increasingly sophisticated communication services. This paper reviews the history of SCADA communication systems, discusses the essential ingredients of a modern communication system, and reviews the characteristics of a number of current and emerging communication technologies which can be used to support distribution automation.
