Abstract
The forest fires of Far East region of Russia occurred in April 1998, have been burning during about a halfyear. About 2 million hectares were burned over in 1998. In this region, forest fires occur every year, and large frres in extreme years are remarkable because they affect the Earth environment more than annual fires. The authors developed a new method of fire detection for multidimensional satellite images to monitor the extent of large forest fires and to estimate burned areas. This method is based on the 3 dimensional histogram. It might be possible to make a fire category database
