Abstract
The non-coplanar structure of a suspended antenna results in difficulties in the implementation of the conventional coplanar EBG lattice. A suspended patch antenna with stacked EBG utilization is proposed in this paper. Simulations and experiments have been carried out to verify the improvements in the antenna performance. An increase of 2.69 dB in the mainlobe-sidelobe ratio is obtained while the backlobe radiation level is reduced significantly. The proposed structure also has the winning feature of compactness.
