Abstract :
Radar installations have very special critical power characteristics. Several sites using different radars have installed and operated Roesel Motor-GeneratorsTM (RMG) for several years. These RMGs have properties that are compatible with the radar pulse loading and isolation requirements. The critical application of the radar´s involves such systems as Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) to detect wind shear near airports, and ASR-9 (Air Surveillance Radar), and NEXRAD for the FAA in areas like Alaska where weather surveillance is extremely important. The Written-Pole technology provides a cost effective means for power protection in remote radar sites because they provide reliable UPS with no batteries, and result in system isolation during thunderstorms without the need to start and run diesel generators for backup-before they are actually required. The paper presents operating data and several case histories for power quality improvement at radar sites
