Abstract
A brief history is given of machine diagnostics, from basic pilot lights to computer-based systems which collect and analyze data. The features and cost-effectiveness of the various levels of sophistication are discussed as they pertain to the shop floor as well as the boardroom. Cost factors are examined.<>
