Abstract :
Advanced machine tool features such as automatic online system identification, a capability for nonrotationally-symmetric control, and fast nanometer positioning are possible, but are hindered because of the need to combine developing precision engineering techniques with a high-performance but flexible computer hardware and software architecture. The emergence of high-speed digital signal processors and other fast but relatively inexpensive CPUs has made available the computational power necessary for such applications. The integration of these elements into a workable system is a necessary step to better define related research directions. A project to demonstrate advanced tool capabilities is underway. The standard controller for a Pneumo ASG 2500 Diamond Turning Machine (DTM) is being replaced with a custom high-performance design. A description is given of the status of the DTM controller project, the computer hardware and software being developed, and plans for future research.<>
