Abstract :
Presents a new means for combining the superior properties of optical fibers for signal transmission with the well-developed techniques of the microelectronics industry for processing on a miniature scale. As proof of concept we present a novel in-fiber modulation scheme using a polymer-coated optical D-fiber embedded in a silicon wafer. We refer to this union of an optical fiber and a wafer as the silicon wafer integrated D-fiber technology (SWIFT)
