  • Abstract
The capability of electromagnetic waves to propagate beyond discontinuities makes it possible to investigate features of buried objects from scattered field measurements. Several applications have been implemented based on this property, such as archaeology, buried pipes and cables detection, and geology. The authors discuss the above mentioned problems with reference to the geometry of two homogeneous half-spaces where a crucial role is played by the approximation of the model in the inverse scattering problem. In particular, the authors discuss how the quadratic approach is able to provide the correct reconstruction in some cases where the linear model does not, referring in particular to the spatial variations with respect to the depth. The authors show from a theoretical point of view the limitations of the linear model
