Abstract :
The author reviews various surge protection design approaches, various classes of transients, and stress level test responses. It is pointed out that with the new information that has been obtained in recent years and placed in the IEEE surge standard, the designer can now make cost-effective designs. Using flow diagrams, the maze of factors to be considered is reduced to a manageable set. In other words, the forthcoming IEEE surge standard has taken a complex transient environment and reduced it to a manageable set of representative surge waveforms
