Abstract
Dimethyl 3,3´-dithiobis (propionimidate) [DTBP] has been examined as a crosslinking agent for collagen and the optimal conditions for crosslinking has been standardised. Crosslinking with DTBP introduces thermally stable intermolecular crosslinks and the crosslinked collagen was highly resistant to degradation by collagenase. The tensile strength of the material increases fourfold by optimal DTBP crosslinking. A comparison of the negative staining pattern of the DTBP and GTA treated collagen reveals that DTBP does not alter the banding pattern of collagen while GTA drastically alters it. Thus DTBP can be considered as an alternate crosslinking agent for collagenous matrices
