Abstract :
Surface patch analysis method is used to calculate the distribution of electromagnetic fields around a vehicle in order to obtain data for devising effective EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) counter-measures for onboard electronic devices. Calculations are made of the electric fields in the passenger compartment under various frequencies and incident plane wave directions. Distinctive standing waves were found on the passenger compartment floor under all conditions and considerable differences were seen in the distribution of electric field strength. These results suggest that the electric field generated at any point on the floor of the passenger compartment could be stronger than that of the incident waves. Expressing the electric field vector as an ellipse elucidated the overall picture of the electromagnetic fields around a vehicle, in addition to revealing variations in electric field strength. It was seen that complex disturbances stemming from the vehicle body configuration can cause the plane of polarization of incident plane waves to change its direction of rotation. A better understanding was also gained concerning the patterns shown by incident waves when penetrating the passenger compartment
