  • Abstract
We propose a feedback rate regulator for VBR traffic in ATM networks using multiple leaky buckets (MLB) mechanism. Unlike the conventional leaky bucket (LB), the leaky rate and buffer capacity of all LBs are shared in the same virtual path in order to use network resources more effectively. In the MLB mechanisms, the leaky rate and buffer capacity of each LB can be dynamically adjusted based on the buffer occupancy. Ten real world MPEG1 traffic traces are used in our experiment to validate the performance of this mechanism. The simulation results show that the cell loss rate has three to more than ten thousand times improvement compared to the conventional leaky bucket method. Moreover, it can prevent the malicious sources from degrading the quality of services of all established connections when the protection policy integrated with feedback rate regulator is used
