Abstract :
This paper studies the technology requirements that GSM high speed data enhancements and wireless multimedia will set for GSM terminals in the future. Both the system dependent requirements as well as multimedia driven system independent requirements are discussed. As a result of continuously increasing functional and non-functional system requirements, there are a number of technical challenges associated with the system development of mobile terminals. Among other things, these include increased processing and memory requirements for video telephony applications and high speed data transmission. At the same time, cost, size, and power consumption should be minimized. Therefore, the gradual introduction of mobile multimedia is seen as one of the main driving forces pushing the development of high performance engine platforms as well as display and camera technologies for wireless terminals in the future
