Abstract
Power transfer through long distance transmission lines faces voltage stability and power flow issues in an interconnected system. These issues can be minimized by placing suitable compensators at appropriate locations. Conventional load flow analysis that are carried out to find line flows and voltage in the system, does not consider compensators. This paper deals with the modification of load flow analysis by incorporating a single mid-point shunt compensator in an interconnected system. As the power flow equations are non-linear, Lagrangian optimization technique is used to obtain optimal shunt compensation to improve voltage profile and power system loadability under steady state condition. A program is developed in MATLAB platform to modify the conventional load flow analysis to optimize power system loadability as well as maintaining the voltage within limits. The advantage of the program is that it gives the best location and optimal compensation to satisfy required constraints. The validity of the program is tested on a five bus system and results obtained are presented in this paper.
