  • Abstract
Broadband digital networks are considered a promising communication support for the new generation of broadcasting services. In this paper, we examine the TV/HDTV statistical multiplexing gain (SMG) for two different source smoothing levels that are related to the video sampling frequency. The TV/HDTV arrival samples were generated from a modified version of the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) process. The analyzed TV sequences were encoded with the MPEG-2 and CCIR-TV Recommendation 723 coders. Our results have shown a SMG increasing when using the appropriate smoothing level and taking into account the image and delay requirements. These results demonstrate that broadband networks are an interesting transmission support for TV traffic and that video source smoothing usage can improve the network performance
