Abstract :
This paper articulates the factors primarily responsible for rapid growth of Captive Power Plants (CPPs) in Bangladesh. It also focuses on how natural gas has become the top energy source for these CPPs. Effects of inefficient use of natural gas and associated problems in CPPs are also discussed in brief. A detailed study on gas based captive power generation in Bangladesh may reveal some ways to use natural gas more efficiently. This endeavor tries with acumen whether CPPs in Bangladesh should be encouraged or not, by comparing the consumption rate of gas for per unit electricity production with other developed countries.
