Abstract
This tutorial paper deals with the concepts behind modern solid-state imaging devices. Photoconversion, charge readout, and image display are discussed. The various types of pixels and how these photosensitive elements may be used in various imager architectures are described. The tutorial ends with a discussion of important imager performance parameters, and possible future developments in image sensor technology
