Abstract
Uncertainty is an unavoidable part of environmentally conscious design. Uncertainty in energy efficiency can impact both operating costs and environmental damage such as global warming. This paper presents a spreadsheet-based decision tool for helping engineers make tradeoff decisions under uncertainty. An example of air conditioning chillers utilizing alternative refrigerants illustrates how the tool can help factor in the effect of uncertainty on the rank ordering of alternative designs
