Abstract
We describe a pyramid structure introduced by Burt (1981) called fractional pyramid. That structure is based on the rigid Gaussian pyramid. In such a structure the reduction factor between two level is given by a fraction k1/k2. This presents the advantage of increasing the number of levels, and slows the loss of information during the construction of the different levels of the pyramid. We show that this structure can improve the way pyramids segment color images
