Abstract :
Manitoba Hydro (MH) was experiencing spacer damper failures on two ±500 kV DC transmission lines and elected to refurbish all existing dampers and install additional dampers. The work was completed in a variable climate, over terrain that included over 400 kilometres (248 miles) of swamp and woodland accessible only by air and while lines remained energized to meet system requirements. The project included respacing dampers to improve damping capabilities, completing additional line maintenance, and the development of a mathematical model to check the veracity of damper placement records.
