Abstract :
This paper contains the design and experimental results of a TRW prototype development that integrated commercially available technology to interconnect a legacy radar subsystem with a commercial display system over an asynchronous transport mode (ATM) SONET network. The network provided an experimental local area network (LAN) infrastructure for the new attack submarine (NSSN) combat system. The network and the legacy radar subsystem interconnection were shown at the 1995 NSSN Open System Critical Item Test (OSCIT) demonstration in Newport, Rhode Island (September 1995). The TRW prototype included network protocol conversion, radar video compression/decompression, and radar digital scan conversion to a digital display. The experimental results, comprised of a series of radar screen photographs show no discernible differences between the direct interconnect to the legacy radar display and the interconnect over the LAN infrastructure to the commercial radar display
