Abstract :
On 2 October, 1996, the Cairo Metro Line Number Two began commercial operation of phase 1A between Shubra El Kheima Station and Mubarak Station in Cairo, Egypt. The Cairo Metro Line Number Two incorporates a ground-based maintenance system (GBMS) that serves two functions. The GBMS monitors and reports the status of train on board systems while the train is in service. The GBMS records maintenance information in a data base and provides reports to the shop management about the train status and maintenance history while tracking spare parts, tools, time to repair, and man hours. The system software provides predictive maintenance information for selected equipment. Information about the status of on board train equipment is transmitted to shop computers through a micro-wave link to a local area network. Mission critical information is transmitted automatically from the shop computers to the Central Control Point (CCP). This paper describes the GBMS in detail and reports the actual benefits provided to systems operation to date by the GBMS
