Abstract :
A novel antenna device with dielectric grating which converts guided microwaves by a planar waveguide (Two-Dimensional Communication Sheet, 2DCS) into directionally radiated beams in air is proposed. As it works reversely, beams propagating in air can also be effectively introduced into a 2DCS. By using these directional wave conversions, 2DCSs embedded in topologically separated planes in living environments such as desks, walls, floors and ceilings can be interconnected wirelessly and the communication area can be extended from a conventional desktop size into a room or a building size. In this paper, we explain the mechanism of the proposed antenna based on the coupled-mode theory, and show experimental results.
