Abstract
Summary form only given. The authors analyze tissue characterization by ultrasound within a framework of specific performance criteria that are proposed as being practically relevant. An initial conclusion is that any practicable tissue characterization technique will need to have the form of real-time, quantitative parametric imaging. Both commercial and clinical learning requirements suggest the strong desirability of standardization around a single generally acceptable technique that could take this form. It is proposed that an image texture analysis approach would be the most promising candidate for this purpose.<>
