Abstract
The optimal scheduling of power units to meet the estimated demand is called the unit commitment problem. Of the available methods for this problem, those using Lagrangean relaxation seem most promising. A description is given of the thermal unit commitment problem. Also given is a short survey of Lagrangean duality including some new techniques, which are applied to the unit commitment problem
