This paper was to investigate the application of item response theory to specify an appropriate item response model for the equating of the mixed-format of multiple-choice items and open-ended items, since equating is the precondition of the development of an item bank for the Computer-Based College English Placement Test. It was shown that the equating approach based on common-item nonequivalent groups design and the two-parameter logistic model is ideal to be used to calibrate item and ability parameters in two alternate test forms since this model fits data of all listening and reading sections in both forms.
