Abstract
In order to improve the overall resilience of future ATM on SDH backbone networks in a cost-effective way, it is essential to follow an integrated-combining the ATM and SDH recovery schemes-survivability strategy. In this paper, we study several multi-layer recovery approaches to assure the resilience of ATM VPs in SDH on ATM transport networks against a set of important failures. Our study is supported by the results of a network planning case study, where we compared the investment cost of the multi-layer survivability strategies, in diverse network and traffic scenarios
