Abstract
The authors discuss a novel design for the linear portion of a high-bit-rate digital optical fiber communications system receiver. It consists of a low-cost, component-tolerant, simple-circuit implementation of the integrate-and-dump matched receiver concept. It is shown that the integrate-and-dump process can be done in a continuous manner without conventional switching and storage circuits by using an integrator in cascade with a passive delay and subtract unit. The dump portion of the system is realized passively with a short transmission line stub, and the design shows promise for bit rates in the range from about 10 Mb/s up to tens of Gb/s
