Abstract :
Describes the design of a Unix business solution for the management information systems (MIS) of a high-tech manufacturer and distributor. A MRP (material requirement planning) application package called DBSI has been implemented on a Fujikama 486-33C model running SCO Unix System V.3.2. The integrated package covers all aspects of manufacturing, inventory, sales, accounting, shipping, receiving, purchasing, cost of materials, pricings, and billing of materials. Unix offers portability because it is written in the high-level language C. The Unix operating system can be ported to a new hardware platform in weeks. Applications developed in the Unix operating system need not be rewritten. Multiple 486 servers can exist to host more than 96 terminals in the system. With the Unix NFS and RFS (network file system and remote file system) support, a terminal can log on and run applications on more than one server
