Abstract
The research of representation model has been concentrated on by psychologists and education researchers for several decades. It is also important for ITS in which the problem described by natural language is solved and the level of comprehending is diagnosed. We propose that problem solving and diagnosing will be performed well depending on the representation. In this paper, we first discuss the role of representation model in ITS. And then how to construct the representation model of arithmetic word problem is described. Some examples are given, too. We conclude that the problem will be solved and diagnosis be performed upon the representation model.
