Abstract :
This paper proposes a fast intra prediction mode decision strategy for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), which aiming at reducing computation time and keeping the coding performance at the same time. Using a notation of a circle, we arrange the candidate modes into different groups. The order of processing MPM(most probable modes) and RMD(rough mode decision) is discussed, which helps a better balancing to the whole intra prediction processes. Different picture resolutions, ranging from 416 ×240 to 2560×1600 are tested and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can greatly reduce the encoding complexity and keep the coding performance loss within a reasonable range.
