Abstract :
Error performance bounds are presented for trellis coded π/M shifted MDPSK with multiple symbol differential detection in a conventional or frequency hopped spread spectrum communication system. Upper bounds on bit error probability are based on the transfer function bounding technique. In order to analyze practical trellis codes (four or more states), the modified state diagram approach introduced by Zehavi and Wolf is employed. Examples have been calculated for M=4 and 8, and for 2, 4 and 8-state trellis codes. At a bit error rate of 10-4 , improvements of 20 dB over the uncoded system can be realized in both worst-case partial band noise and multitone jamming environments
