Abstract :
Presents a stand-alone real time DSP-based implementation of the ISO/MPEG (International Standards Organization/Moving Pictures Experts Group) audio layer 2 algorithm. Employing the AT&T DSP32C floating-point digital signal processor for the real time implementation, two DSPs are needed for the encoder and 1 DSP is needed for the decoder. The MPEG audio layer 2 algorithm can process audio signals up to 20 kHz bandwidth depending on the sampling frequency. At a total bitrate of 256 kbit/s per stereophonic channel (a compression ratio of 6 times), the quality demonstrated by the MPEG layer 2 audio algorithm is excellent
