Abstract
Several European countries are trialling metropolitan area network (MAN) equipment. The MAN implements connectionless data services based on or derived from SMDS (switched multimegabit data services), as defined by Bellcore. The paper gives background on the service, the technology and its evolution towards ATM. A few applications in Europe are presented
