Abstract :
Power grids are currently undergoing a transformation to smart grids through the automation of the power distribution network. This paper considers the power quality in this network, and employs the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) to characterize power signal disturbances. Results are presented which show the advantages of the HHT in terms of data adaptivity and time-frequency resolution. The HHT clearly shows the underlying structure of the signal disturbances, which is essential for developing automatic disturbance detection and classification algorithms.
