Abstract :
COM and Corba component technologies have the potential to provide power industry computer users with substantially better access to power systems analysis tools that are also better matched to their needs. Components provide a convenient package in which to place algorithms, common power systems analysis functions, specialty analysis functions, and component behavior for use in higher level applications. Software suppliers can provide “plug compatible” components so that software from a variety of different suppliers supporting an industry standard can be incorporated into the same user environment with minimal changes. The IEEE can play a role by helping to establish a standard for the interface. This paper discusses the issues related to establishing such a standard. The impact of the interface definition on the underlying circuit models is discussed. The authors argue that a standard interface should take a minimalist approach and support the most detailed circuit modeling requirements. Key attributes of a distribution system simulation component are described to illustrate the interface design issues
