Abstract :
The effectiveness of a radial basis function (RBF) network identifier and a predictive controller to damp out multi-mode oscillations in power system is investigated in this paper. A five machine power system is used in the simulation studies and its transient response to disturbances causing multi-mode oscillations is investigated. The RBF network tracks the changing system conditions. The predictive controller uses multistep ahead predictions of the system output in the overall performance index. The future control signals in the multi-step ahead prediction performance index are obtained using receding horizon control principle. A pole-shifting numerical optimization routine is used to determine the optimum control for the predictive controller. Behavior of the adaptive power system stabilizer (APSS) and its coordination ability with other PSSs in the system are demonstrated
