Modeling and analyzing the behavior of mechanical systems is a promising solution to achieve higher stability, reliability, and availability. The failure principle in one complex mechanism cannot be modeled by traditional fault tree analysis (FTA) method or reliability block diagram (RBD)because the relationship between components may not satisfy the logical connection of AND gate or OR gate. This paper proposes a method for constructing the failure principle model for typical mechanical systems by the status figure and Timed Places Petri net (TPPN) according to the classification of many types of working principle. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using a case study, and the results can provide clues to deeply understand failure mechanism of the spacecraft solar array.
