  • Abstract
    A digital optical transmission link with an in-line EDFA chain is analyzed, through computer simulation and semi-analytical BER expressions. Firstly, a link with a single in-line EDFA is considered. The effect of amplifier position on receiver sensitivity is studied. Then, an amplifier chain is examined. The influence of the EDFA chain characteristics on system performance is investigated: amplifier gain, noise figure and spacing are considered. The trade-offs between EDFA parameters and system optimization are addressed
