Abstract :
Many power engineers have struggled with ideas of standard and special synchronous motor designs as those concepts relate to LCI (load commutators inverter) drives. Today many engineers accept the premise that LCI motors belong in a category unto themselves, different from ´standard´ synchronous motors. Some points of view bearing upon this theme are discussed. Operating principles, application methodologies and criteria, machine design, and field experience are reviewed. Some concepts of standard motor design are described and compared to corresponding aspects of LCI motor designs.<>
