Abstract
It is noted that gate arrays have come of age in the 1980s and CMOS is the dominant technology. Major advances in manufacturing, architecture, and integrated CAD (computer-aided design) tools have allowed predictable delivery of circuits with 100000 used gates. The author discusses gate arrays in terms of basic technology, complexity evolution, array architecture, process technology, and packaging technology
